Marianne and Audrey were first brought together in 2009 through a poetry and music performance by Marianne with poet Laureate Sir Andrew Motion. Here, Audrey curated poems written by cancer patients resulting in the publication ‘The Collection’. After a short introduction about their collaborative work in music and poetry Marianne and Audrey present a programme intertwining the beautiful dance movements from Bach Cello Suite no.1 in G major with a selection of poetry from publications by Audrey Ardern-Jones and some encore pieces for solo cello.

Bios
Marianne Tyler Brown – Cellist
Marianne combines her expertise as performer, alongside her teaching practice, academic research and work in counselling. Marianne studied the cello as an undergraduate at The Royal Academy of Music and postgraduate at Royal Northern College of Music, Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary. She was awarded a Masters in Cultural Management from City University, Masters in Science in Psychosocial Studies from Birkbeck /University College London writing about music in wellbeing and community settings and the vital role music can play in society, healing and personal development. Marianne continues her academic work and research in music and transformation at City University where she is conducting her PhD research in this field.
Marianne has performed with leading orchestras and ensembles including The Halle, Welsh National Opera and Bratislava Chamber orchestra. Her work has also led to recordings for BBC Radio, Television and ITV. Solo and chamber performances include venues throughout the UK and Europe including The Royal Albert Hall with English Festival Orchestra, London Coliseum with English National Ballet, St James Piccadilly, Victoria & Albert Museum, Royal Academy of Arts, Burgh House, Lauderdale House, Stanjel, Castle Slovenia and Palace of The Arts in Budapest. Marianne has recently been appointed musician in residence at The Royal Marsden Cancer hospital following her cello performances there for patients and visiting families over the past ten years. Her collaborations with Audrey Ardern -Jones and her poetry, has inspired her to bring this performance to City University today.
Audrey Ardern-Jones – Poet
Audrey Ardern-Jones spent her childhood in Africa where her English father and Polish mother were posted. She has enjoyed a wonderful nursing career, specialising in cancer genetics. In 2013 Audrey was appointed OBE for her work in genetics and cancer care. Audrey’s poems are widely published and have received prizes in international competitions. Her debut collection’ Doing the Rounds’ was published in 2019 by Indigo Dreams Publishing the award winning poetry publishers. As Artist in residence at The Royal Marsden Hospital Audrey has developed poetry and arts projects for patients and families. This has led to her working with cellist Marianne Tyler Brown and the collaborative performance you will hear in today’s recital.
